AGRIBUSINESS EMPLOYER GUIDE: MY VIEW EXPERIENCES FROM THE FRONT LINE Name: Amelia Taylor Education: University of Guelph, Bachelor of Arts in Agriculture Economics, Graduate in 2012 Leadership Positions: Wellington County Queen of the Furrow for 2007–2008, 4-H Member and Secretary for local 4-H Dairy Club Work Experience: Sales and Project Management Intern at AgCareers. com. Fraberts Fresh Foods — a store supporting the idea of buying local AM: Why are you interested in working in the agricultural industry? AT: I want to work in this field because I have a passion for agriculture and for growing the industry as a whole across Canada. I strongly believe in educating those who are not familiar with the agricultural industry. I am aware of the decreasing number of people going into the field of agriculture as well as other current issues facing the industry, and I want to be a part of the solution. AM: What work experiences have you had in it so far? AT: My agricultural work experience began when I was 12 years old, on Burnsdale Farms. After this summer work experience I became more interested in agriculture, specifically in the dairy industry. In 2006, I had the opportunity to learn more about a different area of the dairy industry through the University of Guelph Laboratory Services. There I was able to experi- ence various stages of milk testing. This co-op experience confirmed that the agricultural industry was the field for my future career. During the same time and throughout the fol- lowing summer, I worked part time for Better Farming magazine. AM: What is it that you hope to gain from an internship when you are considering them? AT: I hope to gain further knowledge about agriculture and the specific 30 job. I trust the well educated and established individuals I am work- ing with will assist students such as myself to be great ambassadors for agriculture as well as the business. I also look for gateways and future possibilities both within the com- pany and within the work experi- ence to add to my resume. AM: What skills have you found most useful and/or had to refine through your internships? AT: Throughout my internship with AgCareers.com this summer I have learned the importance of time man- agement, prioritizing tasks and achieving deadlines. I have also become more aware of the importance of being flexible to work both in a well organized team and independently. In addition, throughout my intern experience I have realized the importance of effective communica- tion within the AgCareers.com team as well as with employers and job- seekers with whom I correspond. AM: What do you look for in a prospective employer? AT: For me, a prospective employer will be flexible with clear boundaries. They will communicate regularly and clearly with all employees. I see the importance of an employer who is patient and willing to teach when needed. I look for an employer who stands by the company’s goals and someone who leads by example. But ultimately, I think that a great employer is someone who sees and expresses the worth of each team member’s efforts and values each employee’s position within the business. AM: How do you learn about the ag industry and the opportunities it offers? AT: As an individual who has been active in agriculture for most of my life I have learned about the industry in many different ways. I have been a member of 4-H for seven years and I am constantly exposed to opportu- nities as well as various clubs I can join through my membership. I have also learned about oppor- tunities through local, provincial and national events I attend. These events may be anything from local fall fairs to annual experiences such as the Canadian Outdoor Farm Show and the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. Furthermore, I personally have gained a lot of agricultural knowl- edge through the Wellington and the Ontario Plowmen’s Association as I have represented Wellington County as their Queen of the Furrow this past year. Lastly, keeping a network of con- tacts from my experiences in the agriculture industry allows me to stay connected and continually learn and experience more. AM: What advice do you have for incom- ing freshmen? AT: Go into any experience with an open mind and a willingness to learn. I have also found that there will be bumps along the way, but it is important to be determined, ambi- tious and to never give up. Do your best to take constructive criticism effectively and utilize the advice and experience you gain from knowl- edgeable professionals. Always remember with a positive attitude, you always have room to grow, to learn and to teach.
