Meet an Industry Leader TomThieding, Director of Marketing Services, Rural Mutual Insurance Company, Madison, Wis. What advice do you have for new professionals entering the industry? I believe it’s important to have multi-disciplinary experience and skills in various facets of marketing and public relations, mainly strong writing skills. When searching for candidates, I’m looking for prospects who have strong written and verbal communications skills, an understanding of marketing, public relations and media relations, basic knowledge of photo editing, web maintenance and desktop publishing. How has the industry changed since you began your career? Over the 20 years I’ve been involved in public policy, public relations and now marketing, I’ve seen the growth of the “CEO farmer” who is more sophisticated in analyzing their business operations and strategic growth.
