Doug Barker is named the SmartStax Research and Develop- ment Project Lead. He will align R&D testing, trait conversion and production research activities to deliver elite hybrid opportunities to Mycogen Seeds . Also, the company announces the expansion of its R&D site based in Saskatoon, SK, expected to be completed in first quarter 2009. The station is focused on developing innovative canola traits, leading hybrids and varieties. The Andersons acquires Douglass Fertilizer & Chemical, Inc. , Maitland, FL, as an addition to its Plant Nutrient Group . Douglass President Joe Hodges, and former Chairman of the Agricultural Retailers Assoc. (ARA) says, “This is a great opportunity for Douglass Fertilizer to further build upon the tremendous growth of our diversified business units. I look for- ward to combining our talented management team and dedicated employees with The Andersons and growing the newly established southern region.” Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) appoints Brad Vannan Pres/COO of ICE Futures Canada , ICE’s wholly- owned Canadian futures exchange. He most recently was VP at Agricore United . Dr. Owen J. Newlin receives the 2008 Iowa State University “True and Valiant” award. The award recognizes an individual’s life- long service, gen- erosity, and distinction that have helped transform the University. The phrase “True and Valiant” is taken from the lyrics to the university’s alma mater, “The Bells of Iowa State.” Newlin, B.S. ’51 Agronomy, M.S. ’53 Crop Production, retired as Sr. VP of Pioneer Hi-Bred and is the former Pres of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa. Among his many hon- ors, he was named NAMA’s “AgriBusiness Leader of the Year” in 1983. The Minneapolis Grain Exchange names Rita Maloney as Mgr of Mktg, Comms and Media Relations, work- ing directly with brokers and other marketing partners to pro- mote the Exchange. Most recently, she worked at WCCO radio where she served as Business Editor and Anchor. Agrium Inc. enters into an exclusive agreement to acquire a 70% equity position in Common Market Fertilizers S.A. (CMF) , one of Western Europe’s largest fertilizer distribution companies. CMF has annual sales revenues of $500 to $600 million, crop nutrient sales volumes of approx. two mil- lion tons and an annual EBITDA of approximately $10 million. The purchase price is $16 million plus working capital of approxi- mately $50 million. Oscar Geyer will remain as CEO.
