Monsanto says its breed- ers are constantly working to develop better seed offerings for farmers, including corn, canola, soy- beans and cotton. Today, Monsanto has more than 250 breeders conducting research at hundreds of locations around the world. “Our researchers use both conventional and marker-assisted breeding technologies to unlock the yield potential of seeds,” explains Dr. Ted Crosbie , Monsanto Vice President, Global Breeding. Monsanto reports it has assem- bled a very broad and deep global germplasm base in order to put together unique germplasm combi- nations to help farmers achieve a better product. This global germplasm base allows Monsanto’s skilled breeders to identify genes from plants in Iowa or Illinois that could benefit a farmer in Argentina, Europe, or China and vice versa. Molecular breeding tools have reinvented plant breeding by enabling Monsanto breeders to effec- tively double the rate of “genetic gain” in seeds. By combining tech- nologies like molecular markers with other breeding tools, breeders can increase the probability of finding the best germplasm from one-in-a- trillion to one-in-five.
