Syngenta and DuPont announce a global agreement that will provide Pioneer Hi- Bred, access to Syngenta's novel insect control corn event, MIR162. Under the royalty- bearing agreement, Syngenta grants Pioneer a non-exclusive, global license with stacking rights to MIR162. The trait is currently in the regu- latory review process in the United States and the major corn export markets. Syngenta also enters into an R&D agreement with Athenix Corp. for the discovery of novel corn insect and soybean cyst nematode resistance genes. The agreement will allow Syngenta access to novel gene leads from which to develop advanced gen- eration corn and soybean products. Former North Dakota Governor Ed Schafer is sworn in as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. He is the nation's 29th Sec'y of Ag and on his first day on the job attended the State of the Union address as a member of the President's Cabinet. John Deere Risk Protection (JDRP) is now offering the industry's first- ever Ethanol Policy by providing coverage to corn producers who have delivery contracts for the pur- pose of ethanol production. The new policy, available once the multi-peril crop insurance policy is with JDRP, insures yield shortfalls below contracted volumes in the event the price to replace the corn rises above the federal crop insur- ance coverage. The policy also requires that the facility offering the ethanol contract procure replacement bushels, eliminating the need for producers to find the replacement grain themselves. AMVAC acquires Valent's Orthene insecticide line. Trevor Thorley, Valent Pres/ COO says, "After a high- ly successful history with Orthene, it is appropriate for us to direct our efforts towards our growing portfolio of innovative new products and to pass this fine product to a well-estab- lished firm that is capable of continu- ing that winning tradition." Under the agreement, AMVAC will take ownership of the assets of the Valent Orthene product line including all registrations, formula- tions and existing inventories of the agricultural and professional prod- uct lines. Americas by Nunhems names John Erb as Carrot Crop Sls Mgr. He was most recently with Bejo Seeds and White Seed Company. He succeeds Russ Kabaker who is promoted to Integration Mgr for the Paragon Seeds Acquisition and Lettuce Crop Sls Mgr. Valent U.S.A. Corporation names Rick Kraus as Brand Mgr of its Domark fungi- cide, Esteem Insect Growth Regulator (IGR), Knack IGR, Presidio fungi- cide and Seize IGR.Kraus was most recently with Bayer CropSciences. DuPont obtains exclusive rights to the herbicide-tolerant traits for sorghum from Kansas State University (KSU). The new traits, developed by KSU researchers, include an ALS- herbicide- tolerant trait and an ACCase-herbicide tolerant trait. Both traits will provide growers with new, more flexible postemer- gence herbicide options for grass control in sorghum with no restric- tions on export marketing. Etigra, Cary, NC, acquires the DuPont Super Boll and FreeFall brand registrations and assets. The DuPont amad-enhanced ethephon brands, CottonQuic and FirstPick, were not included in the assets sale.
