62 Agri Marketing I April 2012 At KBHB, we feel a personal touch is the best way to communicate with our listeners and friends. It is not about a big tent or mascots in our industry. It is not about buzz words. It is about being a part of the community and ensuring that we remain visible to the community. We are there for them when they wake up, at the coffee shop and in the welding shop, that is where you will find us. I have always thought of farm broadcasting in our area more as a service industry than journalism. It is time to step away from the agdeskforabitandseeyouinthe field. by Meghan Grebner NAFB East Region VP Brownfield Ag News Indianapolis, IN Brownfield Ag News was founded in 1972 by Clyde Lear and Derry Brownfield and includes the Brownfield Ag News radio networks and brownfieldagnews.com. The network’s radio programming is now carried on more than 320 radio stations in Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Missouri, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Ohio and South Dakota. In addition to the radio programming, Brownfield also offers “Agricul- ture Today,” a daily e-mail newsletter provid- ing readers with a snapshot of what is happening in agriculture. We also provide listeners with news and information on the go with our Brownfield Mobile app, Brownfield Mobile Text Alerts and Brownfield’s Twitter account. I began my farm broadcasting career at WMBD and WIRL in Peoria, IL, the same radio station that was on nearly every day at the dinner table on our family’s farm. For a farm girl who loved to talk and loved to talk about agriculture, politics and the weather — there wasn’t another job better suited for me. I owe a lot of my passion and knowledge of the agriculture indus- try to my dad, a fifth generation family farmer. Growing up he and I would spend summers together and during chores we would talk about agriculture, how it had changed over the years, what was new and interesting, why he chose to farm and where he thought it was headed for the next generation. At the age of 10, I knew I wanted to talk about agriculture in some way, shape or form. At the age of 31, I spend my days providing the information farmers want to hear about an industry I love. A little over a year ago, one of my mentors, Cyndi Young, extended an invitation to join the Brownfield team. I had always admired Cyndi and her team’s dedication to agriculture and to radio program- ming, and last May, I accepted the invitation and became the tenth member of her broadcast team. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to work with such amazing people. Communications and agriculture are two constantly evolving industries. With something always on the horizon, there is always something to talk about. While Brownfield utilizes tools like Twitter and Facebook to help tell our story, radio is still our foundation. I wake up every morning thankful that I work with a team that is committed to agriculture and committed to radio and farm broadcasting.
