Merial Ltd acquires the New Zealand animal health products company Ancare. The acquisition includes all of Ancare's commercial and mfg operations and assets in New Zealand and in offshore mar- kets including Australia. The research and development arm of Ancare has been split from the commercial operations and will operate as an entity called Ancare Scientific and will be owned and managed by Colin Harvey, the pre- vious owner of Ancare. Ancare Sci- entific, in collaboration with Merial, will develop products for Merial to be marketed globally. DuPont and Evogene Ltd. announce a research collaboration to improve drought stress tolerance primarily in corn and soybeans. Under the agreement, DuPont business Pioneer Hi-Bred has exclu- sive rights to several genes discovered by Evogene for improving these traits. The candidate genes were discov- ered by Evogene's in-silico gene dis- covery technology called the "ATH- LETE." Pioneer will evaluate the licensed genes in its elite corn and soybean germplasm to measure the benefit in its commercial products. DuPont also announces it will contribute $2.175 million to support graduate student research and edu- cation in plant breeding through uni- versity fellowships and a competi- tive fellowship program. "Our industry depends on a con- tinuous source of outstanding talent who can address growing global agricultural needs through creative and innovative science," said William S. Niebur, VP, DuPont Crop Genetics Research and Development. "Based on current trends, we will not have enough talent to meet the needs of this rapidly growing indus- try. We need to identify and support students who have the interest, abili- ties and passion necessary."
