Agrimarketing : Career Supplement USA
16 Finding the right place to begin your career is not easy, and today's economy makes it even trickier. As you begin your job search, take some time to explore the GROWMARK System. With a wide variety of opportunities, you're sure to find something that's a perfect fit. A locally owned and globally strong network of farm supply and grain mar- keting organizations, we serve as a part- ner in today's complex farming opera- tions. We provide manufacturing, processing, and wholesale purchasing of farm supplies for local member cooperatives. FS is the flagship retail brand of the GROWMARK System. "We know that our people are our biggest asset --- talented professionals, dedicated to exceeding farmers' expecta- tions and who have made us a leader in the agriculture industry," says Steve German, GROWMARK university relations and member employment manager. The GROWMARK system offers career opportunities for individuals with a wide range of backgrounds and interests. "Our member cooperatives are looking for employees who can work with their patrons. That involves people skills as well as technical skills such as accounting, agronomy, or agribusiness," German says. A new employee typically begins their career at one of the member cooperatives located throughout the Midwest, Northeast, or Ontario, Canada. There are also employment opportunities at the corporate office in Bloomington, IL, including positions in marketing and communications, energy, human resources, and career development. Advancement in the GROWMARK System is based on demonstrated ability and desire for additional responsibility; not product line, location, or function, German said. Comprehensive training is also avail- able to all employees. 2009 marks the 50th anniversary of the GROWMARK internship program, which offers paid internships for col- lege students, providing them with hands-on experience working in a member cooperative on projects of lasting value. On average, 50 to 70 per- cent of summer interns are hired into full-time positions.
