Agrimarketing : Career Supplement USA
9 If you want a job you love, you have to figure out what that means. For some, it's a position with flexible hours; for others a routine schedule --- travel or no travel? Urban or rural? Near your parents or not? The great thing about working for an agricultural equipment dealership is they are everywhere --- in every state and often exactly where you want to be. And, the variety of positions available can mean you'll find the flexibility you're looking for. Gone are the quaint shops that served the local farm community in the past --- replaced by multi-store opera- tions employing hundreds of people. These companies are in need of bright, capable people with degrees in general business, education, marketing, agribusiness management and other related fields. A farm background and an understanding of rural economics is a plus when being considered for a dealership position. According to Keith Thomas, HR Director for a three-store dealership headquartered in Beloit, Kan.,"Today's youth IS the future of our rural commu- nities and the agriculture industry. Ag equipment dealers are now offering new incentives (signing bonus, tuition reimbursement, and company paid benefits) to staff our business and keep our local graduates close to home." The most successful equipment dealerships are known for providing great service to their customers, treat- ing clients and employees with honesty and integrity, and enabling their team to grow with the company. Dealerships offer competitive salaries and excellent benefits, many offering the potential for increased earnings through commis- sions, profit sharing and stock owner- ship opportunities. Many advertise their positions on AgCareers.com through their affiliation with the SouthWestern Association, a regional trade association serving more than 600 agricultural and heavy-equip- ment dealers in Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma,Texas and New Mexico, rep- resenting manufacturers of all brands. Aaron Lee, partner in a seven- store dealership headquartered in Plainview, Texas, told us,"There are extremely good opportunities avail- able in today's ag dealerships and they're great places to work. The money is good and the atmosphere is much more laid back than 'corporate America' today. Our employees are empowered to make decisions that impact the relationship we have with our customers, rather than run ideas up the chain of corpo- rate command for a decision while the cus- tomer waits. Because of dealership consolida- tion, many positions are specialized. With new technology constantly finding its way to the ag equipment industry there are always new opportunities to differ- entiate yourself from the others by your early adoption of these new concepts." If you are talented, passionately committed to a future in agriculture, and you believe support for agriculture business services is vital to our nation's economy, you owe it to yourself to con- sider a position in an agricultural equip- ment dealership. Like so many others, the agricultural equipment industry is rapidly changing --- computer technol- ogy is a part of the equipment, and pre- cision agriculture, relying on GPS, yield monitoring systems and other high- tech solutions, is becoming an increas- ing part of the landscape. Consider working for an equip- ment dealer. You'll find small-town values with big city benefits and, very possibly, a job you'll love.
