Prior toGeorgia-Pacific, he served in various sales andmarketingmanagement roleswith United Agri Products, Cerexagri and DiamondRFertilizer of Florida. Education: 1989 graduate fromthe University of South Carolina, Business. AM:What is the agricultural heritage of Georgia-Pacific? TS: Backed by an extensiveR&D capability,Georgia-Pacific has a rich history in the agricultural fertilizer market that goes back 50 yearswith our polymer technology experience. We have also been a rawmaterial supplier to fertilizermanufacturers for 20-plus years. In 2004, after seeing an opportu- nity for a step change inNmanagement in agriculture (corn, soybeans, small grains, fruit&vegetable crops) and turfmarkets,we combined our broadmarket experience andR&D development capability to introduce Nitamin Steady-Delivery fertilizer products. The patented design of Nitamin products causes the larger slowreleasemolecules to bind to the soil, which helps provide a steady supply ofNto the plant, reducing leaching of the nutrient through the soil and often increasing crop yield and qualitywhen compared to traditionalNsources. In addition, all of ourNitamin nitrogen productsmustmeet three Georgia-Pacific-established criteria: sustainability, cost-effectiveness for the growers and ease of incorporation into existing production systems. AM:What are your current products? TS:Our newest product,Nitamin Nfusion fertilizer, combines the power of Steady-DeliveryNto conventional fertilizer programs to match the nutritional requirements of the crop. NitaminNFusion nitrogen contains 22%N, 94%ofwhich is slowly available, and it’s designed to be blendedwith quick-releaseN 50 AgriMarketing s June 2009 sources to provide extended delivery and enhanced uptake ofN. OurNitamin 30Lproduct,which was developed for foliar applications on crops and turfgrass, is a blend of methylene urea, urea and triazone. It contains 30%N(60%is slowly available and the remaining 40%is quickrelease urea). We alsowork closely with our distributors to provide the right product in for the right crops and geographies. Two examples areNDemand 30L and Entourage,Wilbur Ellis brands powered byNitamin. AM:HowareNitaminfertilizersdistributed? TS:Georgia-Pacificworkswithleading distributors inkeymarkets.Ourdistributornetworkhas knowledgeable andexperiencedsalesprofessionals in the fieldwithagronomy/soil science backgrounds, andthey knowthe local market conditions andtheneeds of grower customers. Typically, a distributor agrono- mistworkswith a grower or turf manager to develop a customized fertilization programfor the crop’s/ turf’s specific needs based on local factors such as soil type, weather and crops grown. Our network of distributors in target geographiesmeans thatwe can showgrowers, turfmanagers and influencers the benefits of Nitamin nitrogen. AM:What givesGeorgia-Pacific a competitive advantage? TS: Through sound science and in- the-field validation,we’re improving nitrogen efficiency and economic return on investment for growers. Over the past several years,we have coordinatedmore than 400 efficacy trials atmore than 30 universities. The extensive trialwork and grower experience are building intomomentumthat is inspiring even greater confidence inNitamin fertilizers. Another important advantage is thatNitaminmeets the sustainable nutrientmanagement requirements as outlined byThe Fertilizer Institute (TFI) FarmPolicy:Using the right fertilizer product at the right rate, right time and right place. Every farmand field is different, and TFI supports the use of sitespecific bestmanagement practices with fertilizer applications. The efficiency and environmental sustainability ofNitamin products, combinedwith our regionalized distribution systemto get the right products in place, have an excellent fitwithmost best-management practices nationwide. Finally, our grower customers are seeingmore efficient fertilizer applications and improved productivity. They are also able to easily incorporateNitamin into their nutrientmanagement systemin away that’s sustainable and cost effective. AM:What do you currently have in the pipeline? TS:Georgia-Pacific has a rich history of innovation and a significant portion of our revenue is re-invested into R&D. In agriculture, our staff of research agronomists in the Plant NutritionGroup is developing new technology that optimizes crop production. We currently have a number of products involved in trials. Worldwide demand and price volatility are on the rise for nitrogen and growerswant to get themost fromtheirNapplications. Through R&D,we are dedicated to developing optimumratios ofNchemistry to meet specific customer demands through our proven polymer science and solid agronomics. AM
