Agrimarketing : November December 2008
tication and competitiveness—as a result, adding value to product offer- ings which is much more impor- tant . . .and yet more challenging. What keeps you passionate and interested in your career? I’ve always been fascinated by how different organizations manage their business, so I have been able to keep learning. Recently, my passion has been re-sparked by working in a producer-funded organization that is engaged in the global economy. This has expanded my own world. I am also enjoying the chance to help producers sell their product instead of trying to sell products to them, although this experience will help me should I choose to return to the for- profit sector. What is your company doing to recruit and cultivate new talent? We draw on the contacts we have with other commodity organizations, academia and commercial partners. Our organization has a large number ofmanagers who have been with the organization for years—in the past six months, four colleagues havemarked 30 years. That is a double-edged sword because we have exceptional institutional knowledge, yet we face a very significant turnover in the next few years. Do you seek out opportunities to mentor young professionals? I do, primarily among young colleagues, although I enjoyed seeing the strength of developing young professionals by volunteering to judge the NAMA Student Chapter competition the past several years.
