MARKETING NEWS Alltech acquires Ridley Inc., purchasing 100% of the company’s outstanding stock for $34.23 per share. The total consideration payable to Ridley shareholders is approximately $438 million. Headquartered in Mankato, MN, Ridley is one of the leading animal nutrition companies in North America, serving customers mainly in the U.S. and Canada. Ridley employs more than 700 people in the manufacture, sales and marketing of a full range of animal nutrition products under the trade names Hubbard Feeds, Ridley and Masterfeeds. DuPont acquires Taxon Biosciences, Inc. Taxon holds a broad intellectual property estate in the field of microbial consortia and microbial genomics products. “In 2014, the businesses in DuPont’s Agriculture, Nutrition & Health and Industrial Biosciences segments sold more than $1 billion in biological solutions across four market sectors,” reports DuPont Exec VP Jim Borel. “Our in-house, cross-business venture, DuPont Biologicals, draws on our world-class science and deep understanding of food and production agriculture markets to deliver value-added crop biological solutions. “Taxon has built a leading technology platform for the discovery of microbial based products that will further strengthen our capabilities in biologicals.” FMC completes its acquisition of Cheminova, a multinational crop protection company and a whollyowned subsidiary of Auriga Industries, for approximately $1.8 billion, including assumption of debt. Pierre Brondeau, FMC Pres, CEO and Chmn says, “Cheminova has a highly complementary product portfolio and geographic footprint and follows a similar strategic approach to FMC in applying technology to deliver solutions to its customers. This transaction will broaden our Agricultural Solutions portfolio and significantly strengthen our market access.” 10 Agri Marketing s May 2015 Iowa’s Governor Terry Branstad declares a State of Emergency as the Avian Flu spreads among its poultry facilities. The proclamation: 1. Activates the disaster response and recovery aspect of the IA Homeland Security and Emergency Management Dept’s IA Emergency Response Plan. 2. Authorizes the use and deployment of all available state resources, supplies, equipment and materials deemed necessary by state agencies. 3. Temporarily authorizes IA state agencies, local law enforcement and private contractors to remove and/or dispose of live animals and animal carcasses on publicly or privately owned land, if threatening to public health or safety. 4. Authorizes implementation of stop movement and stop loading restrictions and other control zone measures including establishing buffer zones, checkpoints, and cleaning and disinfecting operations. 5. Authorizes state agencies to assist with disinfection, depopulation and livestock carcass disposal efforts. 6. Temporarily waives weight restrictions on selected bridges, allowing for timely and efficient disposal of poultry carcasses. So far the state has lost 26 million chickens and turkeys and 41% of its egg-laying hens. AM A study by the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications shows that global adoption of genetically modified crops reached 448 million acres in 2014, an increase of 15 million acres from the previous year. Southern States Cooperative names Jeff Stroburg as Pres/CEO. He had recently retired as CEO of West Central Cooperative and has been with Renewable Energy Group, Countrymark Cooperative, and Hamilton Farm Bureau Cooperative. Stroburg succeeds Tom Scribner, who is retiring. Stroburg Dow Chemical Co. sells its specialty chemical business AgroFresh to an investment arm of Avenue Capital Group for $860 million. Dow will keep a minority stake in the business, initially holding about 40% of the shares. Salford Group acquires Valmar Airflo, Inc., a manufacturer of seeding and granular application equipment. Valmar will continue to produce equipment from its Elie, MB, manufacturing facility. Salford Group plans additional investment to expand production capacity and marketing activities, making Valmar products more widely available to North American farmers. Minnesota-based WASP Inc. acquires Fast Manufacturing, a manufacturer of sprayer and liquid fertilizer applicator equipment. Farmer-founded in 1990, Fast Manufacturing opened a 144,000-sq-ft facility in Windom, MN, in 2014. Bayer CropScience announces a strategic innovation partnership with venture capital and creation firm, Flagship Ventures, to help Flagship identify, fund, and develop startup agricultural companies The partnership includes an investment in Flagship Ventures Fund V, a $537 million venture capital fund. Ignacio Colonna joins AgriThority LLC as Research Manager — Latin America. He had been with Pioneer Argentina SRL. The European Union approves 17 biotechnology traits for import. The traits, which include the DuPont Pioneer’s Plenish and Monsanto’s Vistive Gold high-oleic soybean
